Troubled Teens Help - ADD ADHD Symptoms. Because everyone shows signs of these behaviors at one time or another, the guidelines for determining whether a person has AD/HD are very specific. To be diagnosed with AD/HD, individuals must have six of the nine characteristics in either or both DSM-IV categories listed below. In children and teenagers, the symptoms must be more frequent or severe compared to other children the same age. In adults, the symptoms must affect the ability to function in daily life and persist from childhood. In addition, the behaviors must create significant difficulty in at least two areas of life, such as home, social settings, school, or work. Symptoms must be present for at least six months. Criteria for the three primary subtypes are: AD/HD - Predominantly Inattentive Type 1.Fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes. 2.Has difficulty sustaining attention. 3.Does not appear to listen. 4.Struggles to follow through on instructions. 5.Has difficulty with organization. 6.Avoids or dislikes tasks requiring sustained mental effort. 7.Loses things. 8.Is easily distracted. 9.Is forgetful in daily activities.

AD/HD - Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Type in teens 1.Fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in chair. 2.Has difficulty remaining seated. 3.Runs about or climbs excessively. 4.Difficulty engaging in activities quietly. 5.Acts as if driven by a motor. 6.Talks excessively. 7.Blurts out answers before questions have been completed. 8.Difficulty waiting or taking turns. 9.Interrupts or intrudes upon others.

All these symptoms are treatable in one way or another. Although the label may be with you for life, the way you handle it does not have to be. Please give us a call if you are in need of a boarding school for your defiant teen that has symptoms of add/adhd.
