About Substance Abuse TreatmentThe substance abuse treatment is crucial for drug abusers in order to reduce their drug use, improve their ability to function and minimize the medical and social complications. The main goal for any person following a substance abuse treatment is to obtain total recovery from the addiction. It is very important that a person realizes that a one-time substance abuse treatment will not be enough for a patient to achieve long-term abstinence from abuse or addiction. For a substance abuse treatment to be efficient it must include various matching interventions and a couple of services and settings must be used in order to cater to an individual's particular problems and needs. These treatments include counseling that can help patients avoid high-risk behaviors through psychotherapy, medication, family therapy, parenting instructions, vocational rehabilitation and the assistance of medical, social and legal services. The duration of the therapy varies according to the patients' particular needs. Thus, the short-term methods, which are those that take less than 6 months, include medications, residential therapy, outpatient therapy and medical detoxication while long-term treatments include therapeutic community treatment, methadone maintenance, outpatient treatments and cognitive behavior treatments. With strong support from friends and family, coupled with the right approach to substance abuse treatment the patient's total and lasting abstinence from substance abuse can be achieved. What is important to remember is that there is no particular treatment that is best for all individuals and each patient is treated through a combination of therapies and other services to recover him. There are many programs that take into account factors such as age, gender, culture, race, sexual orientation, housing, employment and all you have to do is find the one that suits you best.
