Back to articles list

Boarding schools in the past have been notorious for only housing troubled teens who needed to move out of their familial home in order to stay out of trouble.  These days there are numerous different types of boarding schools, not all of which are for troubled teens.  No matter the reason for sending your child to a boarding school, they will leave being more independent, self-motivated, confident, and capable of making important decisions for the betterment of their lives.  While there are boarding schools for "good" kids, a majority of them are for troubled teens who need to reestablish their respect for authority, commitment to school, and self worth.

These boarding schools for troubled teens are based on the tenets of strict discipline, tough regulations, and accountability for ones actions.  The reason the discipline is so tough is to get troubled teens back into a structured life.  And if a teen does not follow the rules, the punishment is sure to come.

The boarding schools for troubled teens are all tailored to help teens address a myriad of problems, which are holding them back from fulfilling their potential.  These special boarding schools help students tackle several problems like depression, alcohol, drug abuse, teen suicide, stress, ADHD teen pregnancy, conduct disorders, behavioral problems, oppositional defiant disorders, learning disabilities, obesity, eating disorders, violence, bullying and other problems that adolescents may face. The school provides therapeutic programs and counseling to enable the child to overcome problems through therapy, counseling, personality development workshops and many other activities. One of the important aspects of boarding schools that may be overlooked is it helps troubled teens understand they are not alone.  By placing them in an environment with individuals with similar addictions, a trouble teen will see that success can happen and that they do not need to do it all by themselves.  With support from faculty and family counseling, a troubled child's live can be turned around for the better. There are religious, military and private boarding schools that focus only on troubled teens.

Boarding schools for troubled teens have programs that last from a few months to a few years, depending on the requirements.  They offer more attention to students through a smaller student-teacher ratio, as well as special programs that help them focus and deal with their problems, as well as maintain a normal academic setting.

While choosing a boarding school for your troubled teenage, consider the location, the size of the school, therapeutic programs, facilities, faculty members, workload, academic requirements, support services like counseling/career guidance, athletics, arts and the school's environment.
