Boot Camps And Troubled TeensTeens are very influenced by the environment they live in and unfortunately, sometimes things go for the worst. A boot camp program may be a good remedy for a teenager who has experienced problems of any kind. For example, if your teen has recently been expelled from school or is constantly running away, maybe it's time for you to look into sending him or her to a juvenile boot camp. Some people view a juvenile boot camp as a form of child abuse. However, positive results in the lives of thousands of teens have been seen after a boot camp trip. There are a lot of issues that are dealt with in a juvenile boot camp. Among them we remind oppositional defiant disorder, ADD/ADHD, uncontrollable anger or sudden outbursts. Running away, substance abuse and bad influences from friends are also issues covered by a boot camp program. If you do choose to send your teen to a boot camp, you can expect that they will be in a very strict, highly structured and disciplined setting. All measures will be taken to ensure that after the time spent in the boot camp, your teen will be at least partially recovered regarding any problem that they might have had. This may not be very pleasant for a scared teenager, but after all, this isn't church camp. And don't expect it to be very cheap either. Prices for one month at a juvenile boot camp start at $2,000 and go up from there. However, the cost of a boot camp program can well be worth it if you have a teen that is defiant and out of control. Do keep in mind that most a juvenile boot camp doesn't usually deal with kids who are on any kind of medication. If you plan to send your child to a boot camp, it is highly recommended, and sometimes even mandatory that you wean them off of their medication before they go. The reason behind this is that some teens that are under medication are also supposed to be under special surveillance. And besides, in many situations, the camp will attempt to help a child deal with life medication-free. Such a boot camp program may seem inhuman to some parents. However, the new authority problem they are faced with, the new people that will be met there, plus the change in scenery may benefit you child very much. And make sure you explain you teen that a boot camp is not a punishment, but rather a way to help them and a way to meet other persons as well. While sending your teen off to one of the many juvenile boot camps may seem like a last ditch effort to save your child, keep in mind that it's not always the best option. For one thing, there may be ways that may seem less harsh to them, like psychiatric treatment somewhere near your home, so your teen may not need boot camp. On the other hand, if your teen has exhibited any signs of suicidal tendencies, a camp is also not a good idea. Instead, consider having them treated in a psychiatric hospital or a residential treatment center. You may also want to consider a therapeutic boarding school if you have discovered that your teen is severely depressed. If he or she is self-mutilating or has been diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder, juvenile boot camps are not the answer. |
