Dealing With Learning Disorders

Neurological disorders give rise to learning disorders and this can have an effect on the individual's social and intellectual development. Sometimes, children with learning disorders are smarter than children of their own age, but have difficulty in listening, writing, thinking, spelling, reading to name a few. The learning process for someone with learning disorders is more difficult and also different. However, parents should not despair as many famous people suffered from learning disorders, for example, Walt Disney had trouble reading all his life, Albert Einstein was unable to read till he was about nine years old and the famous actor Whoopi Goldberg also has a learning disability.

Learning disorders can be severe or they can be mild or moderate. Sometimes learning disorders are hereditary, this means that if your parents or grandparents have one, then the chances of you having the same is high. You have to keep in mind that learning disorders are permanent and cannot be cured. But today, with so much expertise in this field it is much easier to get help than in the good old days.

Some individuals who suffer from a mild learning disorder may not need a lot of help in their lives but individuals with severe learning disorders on the other hand need help every step of the way from the basics of even getting dressed, filling out a form or even going shopping. Some individuals with learning disorders tend to have some sort of physical disability as well; these individuals would generally require a lot of support and assistance round the clock.

However detecting if an individual has a learning problem may not always be that straightforward. But, if a child exhibits a language and speech problem this may be an indication of a learning disorder.

A learning disability and ADHD can occur at the same time, but these two disorders are completely different.
