How To Treat Teens With Add

Back to articles list

An early diagnosis has a major importance due to the proven fact that medical intervention tends to be more effective before the illness evolves to an advanced stage. Attention Deficit Disorder - or ADD- is a medical condition that affects all aspects of someone's life. It is characterized by the inability to keep focus followed, as the disease will develop, by hyperactivity and impulsivity. But most of the people don't know about their Attention Deficit Disorder problem until they are much older. This behavioral disorder, that usually expresses itself in early childhood, unless properly treated, could interfere with educational achievements in case of teens with ADD, self-esteem and professional and personal relationships, later in life.

Mainly, the Attention Deficit Disorder is a learning disorder, and therefore teens with ADD learn differently and perceive everything around them in another way, that is, different from the way we are used to perceive things. Moreover, they tend to act impulsive, on the spur of the moment, and they generally have a difficult time in controlling this behavior. Being regarded just as a discipline issue at first, it is important to realize that teens with ADD risk becoming a social problem, leading to alcohol or even drug abuse, depression and a general tendency to reject the others. Because the Attention Deficit Disorder syndrome covers different aspects, it can show up in different ways in different people. ADD has different manifestations when it comes to young and very young children; one of the characteristics of this disease is that they lack the ability to focus, have a tendency to loose interest in playing with kids their age, watch TV, or any other activity that is specific to this period. As for adults and teens with ADD, there are similar symptoms, but they also have the need to be always busy doing something, tending to multi-task.

If they don't find something that would make them highly active, they develop an impulsive behavior. Living in a world of their own where everything is constantly shifting, teens with ADD can experience feelings of boredom, becoming unable to keep their focus on the tasks they need to complete. For families, friends, classmates or coworkers, people with ADD seem to be disorganized, they are unable to sit still, plan ahead, finish tasks, or be fully aware of what's going on around them. In some situations, from time to time, teens with ADD seem to act normal, making the others to think that they can control these behaviors. As soon as the doctor discovers ADD syndrome it's important to discuss and choose the right treatment. ADD treatment is different for each person, most of the teens with ADD needing a total treatment plan.

This should combine medication with other support, like counseling or anger management courses. Common medicines for ADD are called stimulants, as they stimulate certain chemicals in the patient's brain that scientists think are the cause of the symptoms. In addition to medication, counseling, and support are also part of the treatment. It is recommended that people know about the condition of teens with ADD so they can be a part of the treatment plan. ADD is a medical condition not an embarrassment. Managing ADD symptoms takes some careful work as the medication used in the treatment of teens with ADD are close to those drugs sold illegally on the streets.

Everyone might have trouble concentrating or paying attention, but for teens with ADD, being unable to pay attention or follow instructions can cause problems at school and later in their lives. Remember that a person suffering from the ADD syndrome may not be aware that he is behaving in a way that's different from the others'.
