Learning Anger Management Skills

Back to articles list

We live in a fast paced and hectic world. This can cause some added difficulties for people with anger management problems. If you have a range of anger management skills that you can use will increase your anger control.

There are some very effective anger management skills that can be learned quite quickly. If you practice them regularly when you're not angry or anxious you will be able to use them when it counts. Never try and learn a new anger management skill when you are upset because your mind won't focus and you won't be able to concentrate on learning when angry.

If you have been irritated or annoyed by someone you have to try not to respond immediately. Counting to ten slowly before replying will help you calm down a little. You should try and slow down the situation so that you can think things through. If you need to you can make an excuse to leave the room for a few minutes so you can get some space.

Although they will take some time to practice, learning abdominal breathing techniques to slow your breathing down will also be very helpful. You can learn some excellent breathing and relaxation techniques at yoga, tai chi or meditation classes. When you feel the anger increasing you need to use these slow breathing techniques.

Learning to be assertive is also an excellent anger management skill. Anger will commonly occur when people feel ignored, unheard or powerless. Assertiveness training can help you to express your feelings and requests without becoming at all aggressive. This is extremely helpful in the workplace where poor anger control can cause some major problems.

There are of course many more anger management skills you can learn. Attending classes, having therapy or learning online are all sound options for learning effective anger management skills.
