Learning Disorders

Back to articles list

Even if verbal communication seams to be the most important way to express feelings, more then 60% of all communication is made nonverbally. People take this for granted, that is way detecting a person that suffers from nonverbal Learning disorders (NLD).

Everyone understands that importance of good communication. People that talk fluently and with confidence usually get better jobs inspire confidence and have an advantage in some areas. Learning disorders are difficult to detect. When in school, children that read slower and with difficulties are often considered as "problem" pupils. But slow reading can be a sing of nonverbal learning disorders (also called "right-hemisphere Learning disorders). Unfortunately most schools don't have specialized personnel that can detect the syndrome and kids are the only ones that suffer. Learning disorders usually allow progress, but in the individual suffering from them needs more time to progress and he will probably fail in situations that require fast reaction time.

Learning disorders are usually caused by a few factors, all relating to the right hemisphere of the brain. Most people that suffer from this syndrome have suffered a severe head injury, received radiation treatment or have been treated for hydrocephalus. The right part of the brain is important for intermodal integration. If it's damaged, the communication skills are processed by the left hemisphere of the brain. But this part is not used to conducting communication activates and this is how nonverbal Learning disorders appear.

Learning disorders affect both males and females and it is said that about 1% of the world's population is affected by a form of a learning disorder. The nonverbal learning disorder was discovered in the 1970's, but not much progress was made in detecting affected pupils in schools. The disability is considered mild and it's not viewed as other disabilities. Most of the people that suffer from NLDs are never diagnosed because of the hard to detect symptoms. The proper time to detect the presence of NLD is in early childhood. Before the child learns to speak, he should communicate nonverbally. It's hard for parents to realize what's wrong with the child, but usually they can tell that something is wrong. There are some behavior changes in children with nonverbal learning disorder: they have very little coordination, they don't understand nonverbal communication and may have problems with social interaction. Infants with NLD have a hard time leaning to tie their shoe laces, have a hard time with basic motor skills and need more time when learning sports that require coordination. A child suffering from nonverbal Learning disorders can understand and learn anything that is communicated trough language, but he can't learn by watching. Any form of nonverbal communication can't be comprehended by a child suffering from this syndrome. On the other hand, persons with NLD don't communicate only trough language and everything that they need to express is done by saying it.

Learning disorders are hard to cure. The best way for a child with NLD to integrate into society is to have good parents. Parents can teach their infants everything with direct communication, the only form that can be understood by them. Another effective method is to set up group meetings with other kids that suffer from nonverbal Learning disorders; this will make the child feel normal.
