An average stay of three to six weeks is usually required for the behavioral changes to take place but stays of even a year or more are not uncommon to ensure a lasting change in behavior. These specialty boarding schools usually offer a large variety of programs meant to help the Troubled Teen, these programs include academics, athletics, personal development courses, emotional growth sessions as well as daily responsibilities and duties.

The Christian boarding schools address the needs of a Troubled Teen by using a Christian-based philosophy. Military schools can help teens with mild problems or who need more discipline and structure; however they are not designed to provide help with serious problems.
