Recognizing A Bipolar Teen Attitudes And Behavior

Back to articles list

We all know that the adolescence can be a rough time; the changes any teen goes through at this age have a lot of effects on their attitude, on their way to perceive things, and consequently, on their behavior. Behavior and attitude problems are met quite often, and the adolescent himself has a hard time controlling his reactions; but for a bipolar teen is much more difficult than for the rest. This disorder will lead to depression and manic phases anyway, so for the bipolar teen it is a double burden. In their case, phases when they feel very down and others when they are exuberant mix; naturally enough, they feel that their sense of reality and their internal balance in fading away, thus leading to further emotional problems.

But how exactly do you distinguish a bipolar teen from any other teen that might be simply passing through a phase? Are there clear signs of this disability? If you notice that your son goes through severe behavioral changes, being unusually happy or sad, silly, going from extreme happiness to rage or aggressiveness episodes, then you should start asking questions. A bipolar teen might become extremely unrealistic, considering himself much more powerful than it would ever be possible. Others show an increased level of energy, being able to go for days with little or even no sleep at all without being exhausted. In other cases, the bipolar teen seems to be very talkative, but not that coherent in the same time: he goes from one topic to another without noticing, gets distracted very easily, without having the full ability to really concentrate. In some cases, they develop a repetitive behavior, tending to take unnecessary risks; consequently, it is not unusual for a bipolar teen to become a drug or alcohol addict, or have tendencies to antisocial, promiscuous behavior
