Symptoms Of Teens With Bipolar Disorder

Back to articles list

For many years it has been considered that bipolar disorder, which is also known as manic-depressive illness, only affects adults. Nowadays things are different as researchers have found that children as young as seven years old can have this disorder. Being characterized by severe fluctuations in mood and activity levels, bipolar disorder is a treatable neurobiological brain illness.

Because of their age-appropriate emotions and behaviors, symptoms of bipolar disorders in children are hard to be recognized. Another important aspect which has to be taken into consideration is being represented by the fact that children suffer from the illness differently from adults. Bipolar disorder is being marked by mood cycling between periods of intense highs and lows, in cases of adults. But for teens with bipolar disorder, the disease often appears to be a rather chronic mood deregulation with a combination of elation, depression, and irritability.

Teens with bipolar disorder often involve very fast mood swings between depression and mania repeatedly in a day. Teens are more likely to be irritable, and they are prone to destructive outbursts, unlike many adults. Teens with bipolar disorder often suffer from headaches, stomach aches, and fatigue, during a depressed mood. Also, evidences of bipolar disorder occurring in childhood are being represented by symptoms such as poor performance in school, poor communication, and extreme sensitivity to rejection or failure. Both maniac and depressive symptoms are being shown by many teens with bipolar disorder.

Sometimes, it can be hard for the early onset of bipolar disorder to be diagnosed. It is required for early treatment by an experienced medical practitioner. For the detection of this illness, no specific test is currently available. The disease of teens with bipolar disorder often begins with major depression characterized by chronic irritability. The teens whose parents are having the illness are more likely to be affected.
