Teen Substance AbuseTeen substance abuse is a very big problem nowadays, especially in the USA. A survey concerning this problem was taken there in 1995. The subjects of this survey were 12th grade students. What was found out is that two-thirds of all these students had to choose between using and not using drugs before they graduated from high school.Other surveys on teen substance abuse were taken in 1998 and 1999. The results were that 56% of the teenagers who participated in these surveys said that marijuana was easy to get and 72% of them said that alcohol was easy to get. Another worrying result is that before they get 17, 56% of the teenagers know a drug dealer. Another survey result is that 1.1 million teenagers are dependent of drugs and 1 million are dependent of alcohol. When you talk about teen substance abuse, the substances you're talking about are: alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, cocaine, opiates, stimulants, inhalants, hallucinogens, steroids and prescription drugs. When talking about teen substance abuse the symptoms of substance abuse should be discussed. These symptoms include: changes in the quality of work, changes in discipline, withdrawal from responsibility; the interest in one of the things the person used to like very much becomes low; the person changes some of his/ her friends; it gets harder for the person to concentrate; the person gets nervous easily; he/ she borrows more money from friends than he / she used to; he/ she starts stealing little things from school, home or from his/ her employer; the person becomes more secretive; he/ she might wear sunglasses when the time is not right for that. There are also some physical signs of teen substance abuse, such as: slurred speech, impairment of attention and memory impairment.
