Teens With AdhdAttention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (or more commonly know as ADHD) is a developmental disorder manifested trough inattention, hyperactivity and forgetfulness. According to some studies it affects about 5% of the world's population. Most of the teens with ADHD are also encountering difficulties with self control. The hyperactive type of ADHD is easier to notice in childhood. Most of the teens with ADHD are hyperactive, always move around, they are impulsive and generally they do dangerous things without thinking or realizing that their actions come with consequences. But there are different manifestations of the disorder. Some teens with ADHD commonly lose things, don't pay attention to anything and forget anything easily. They are not that active as the other type and sometimes may be considered lazy. This type of ADHD is actually called ADD, because the hyperactivity is missing. Even dough ADHD is not a server illness, if left untreated it can cause many problems in a persons life. The most affected are teens with ADHD because they can't focus on their school work and can't evolve like other students. Because the patients have very impulsive temper, they might argue a lot with their families and friends. Also, teens with ADHD can become depressed and this can lead to alcohol abuse, drugs or even suicide. It's very hard to detect ADHD, but it can be done with the help of specialized doctors. Even harder is for teens with ADHD because adolescents usually go trough the same symptoms as those with ADHD. It's very hard to make the difference between an adolescent with going trough puberty or a child with ADHD. Once the disorder is been detected, the patient wins half the battle. Some of the teens with ADHD can show no symptoms. If they are intelligent the effects of ADHD are visible only in higher grades, when the classes become more challenging. Some studies show that, in average, there is one student in every class that suffers from ADHD. A few years ago there was a study on teens with ADHD. More boys were diagnosed with ADHD then girls, but now scientist found out that girls have different symptoms then boys and probably the same number of boys and girls are suffering from ADHD. Girls are not that impulsive as boys, they tend to be shyer or some tend to talk a lot and interrupt anyone around them without realizing what they are doing. Also they have more problems with alcohol and drugs. Another particularity is that girls can deal with the competition at school and they have no problems with studying. Most of the teens with ADHD are diagnosed by a counselor or a therapist. Some schools have trained personnel that can detect the disorder in time. People used to think that ADHD can be cause of to much sugar consumption. This is not true; studies later proved that sugar and ADHD have nothing in common. The syndrome is part genetic and can be partly cured with medication and therapy. Some doctors think that ADHD can appear if the mother consumed alcohol or used drugs during the pregnancy, but scientist can't say if this is true or not. Sometimes, at teens with ADHD, the disorder may have appeared from an injury to the head, but all of these possibilities are just theories and they were never proven. |
