Teens With Bipolar Disorder 2

Back to articles list

The teens with bipolar disorder are a common issue because this disorder usually develops in older teenagers and young adults. In the recent years it has become a little controversial because it has also been discovered in children as young as six years old, so many consider that bipolar disorder is becoming over-diagnosed. When it comes to teens with bipolar disorder, it is important not to jump to conclusions and, if your child has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you might want to get a second opinion before taking measures and embarking on a treatment plan.

Teens with bipolar disorder are very difficult to diagnose because many of the symptoms are similar to those of the ADHD disorder, other conduct disorders or they may be the cause of normal child-like behavior. Another problem in the case of teens with bipolar disorder is that of the medication used, which are stimulants and thus, there is the risk of triggering mania in children with this disorder.

The main difference between children and teens with bipolar disorder is that young children in a manic phase might be more irritable than adults and hence, they may be more likely to have psychotic symptoms like, for instance, hallucinations that is hearing and seeing things that are not real. Moreover, during a depressive episode, they might be more likely to complain of physical symptoms like aches and pains. While these states may be separated by week, months or years in adults, they can happen within a single day in case of children.
