The Benefit Of Wilderness Camps For Troubled Teens

Back to articles list

Wilderness Camps are one option for a parent attempting to deal with a troubled teen. Wilderness camps allow for the troubled teen to be separated from the problem areas and relearn such important tenets as discipline, respect, and acceptance of authority. Many parents of troubled teens have come to a crossroads with what to do with their children.

Wilderness camps or wilderness programs allow for trained professionals to take over the discipline aspects of a troubled teen and allow them to refocus their lives in a more structured way. Most wilderness programs last one to six weeks and totally immerse a troubled teen in a constructive environment from which they can begin to structure their lives around more positive aspects. By holding troubled teens accountable in wilderness camp, results can quickly be seen. One of the most important things for parents of troubled teens sent off to wilderness programs or camp is to maintain the same principles taught once they return home.

By following the authoritative measures presented at the wilderness camps, parents will see a continued improvement in their troubled teen. Wilderness camps are more likely to be behavior modification programs with a component of the program held outdoors. They remove urban distractions so troubled teens can reconnect accept responsibility for their choices. Because these wilderness programs are generally held in summer, they may not include an academic component. There are a few that do, though, which is especially important for troubled teens who have fallen behind during the school year. If you are struggling with a troubled teen in your home, a quality alternative to correct destructive behavior is to send your troubled teen to wilderness programs or camps. You will be helping them right their lives and begin the path to a more productive adulthood.
