What To Look For When You Need A Substance Abuse Recovery ProgramThroughout US, you will find more than 10,000 rehabilitation centers, each one of them offering a somehow different substance abuse recovery program. If you are looking for such a center, then most probably you'd like to have as much info as you can regarding their programs and therapy methods. Even if this differs from one center to the other, we can generally say that there are three categories of programs. For some people, the best substance abuse recovery program is the one that is provided in an outpatient setting. These patients are subjected to a long term medication consisting of methadone, a medication taken orally, in order to help them surpass the cravings; this is only the first step of the substance abuse recovery program, in order to prepare the patient for further counseling and therapy, as this medication will help him to be more receptive to psychotherapy, group counseling and other required interventions. Of course, this isn't the only way to treat a person that has addiction problems. Another kind of substance abuse recovery program is based on nalterxone, a medication administered after the patient has undergone the detoxification program in a residential setting, in order to prevent the apparition of withdrawal syndromes. Naturally enough, the drug itself won't suffice, although it inhibits the patient's cravings. The substance abuse recovery program requires continuous counseling too, in order for the program to be efficient. People that have bigger addiction problems require residential treatment, as abusing drugs for a long time makes them one of the most difficult patients. This last kind of substance abuse recovery program supposes the hospitalization of the patient for a period of time that is generally longer than 6 months. The good part is that these kinds of centers are not so much as a hospital, but as a home. There, the patient will undergo several therapeutic programs; the substance abuse recovery program will imply group therapy, behavioral and cognitive therapy and 24 hour surveillance.
