Why a boarding school is right for your troubled teen

Back to articles list

For many years, boarding schools have been an alternative to helping troubled teens separate themselves from their detrimental environment and hopefully achieve more discipline and success.  With the number of problems troubled teens are going through these days, boarding schools have become tailored to specific problems. There are ones that deal solely with substance abuse, authoritative issues, and poor school grades to name a few.  It is always tough for a parent to ask for help from outside sources to deal with their kids, but boarding schools are an option and they will help your child become more confident, capable, and independent.  If as a parent, you have become lost with what to do with your child, consider the option that is boarding schools.

No matter the purpose of the boarding school, the number one thing a troubled teen will take from the experience is the discipline aspect of it.  Many troubled teens struggle with authority and a boarding school's emphasis on discipline will help get the troubled teen back in to a regimented life that is more constructive than destructive.

The boarding schools for troubled teens are all tailored to help teens address a myriad of problems, which are holding them back from fulfilling their potential.  These special boarding schools help students tackle several problems like depression, alcohol, drug abuse, teen suicide, stress, ADHD teen pregnancy, conduct disorders, behavioral problems, oppositional defiant disorders, learning disabilities, obesity, eating disorders, violence, bullying and other problems that adolescents may face. The school provides therapeutic programs and counseling to enable the child to overcome problems through therapy, counseling, personality development workshops and many other activities. One of the important aspects of boarding schools that may be overlooked is it helps troubled teens understand they are not alone.  By placing them in an environment with individuals with similar addictions, a trouble teen will see that success can happen and that they do not need to do it all by themselves.  With support from faculty and family counseling, a troubled child's live can be turned around for the better. There are religious, military and private boarding schools that focus only on troubled teens.

Boarding schools for troubled teens have programs that last from a few months to a few years, depending on the requirements.  They offer more attention to students through a smaller student-teacher ratio, as well as special programs that help them focus and deal with their problems, as well as maintain a normal academic setting.

While choosing a boarding school for your troubled teenage, consider the location, the size of the school, therapeutic programs, facilities, faculty members, workload, academic requirements, support services like counseling/career guidance, athletics, arts and the school's environment.
