Choosing a Boot Camp for Your Troubled Teen

Back to articles list

Some troubled teens are so out of control that they need a stricter environment to help straighten them out and help put them on the road to recovery. For these teens, a boot camp for troubled teens is the best option. These boot camps are geared for short term solutions, but some of them are available for long term stays if that should be necessary. The main goal of these boot camps is to pretty much scare troubled teens into compliance with strict rules and physically grueling regimens.

Boot camp for troubled teens is practically identical to the boot camps used for military training. Both utilize uniforms and require those in attendance to use terms of respect when addressing their superiors. Troubled teens must go through daily exercises and activities that promote respect and responsibility, both useful tools for the teen both immediately and later in life. Teens must also pass strict inspections in order to complete the boot camp and be released back to their parents. Many times, this brief reality check is enough to help turn the troubled teen around, but sometimes, boot camp is not the right choice, so a parent must choose carefully.

To decide whether or not boot camp for troubled teens is right for your teen or not, you must look at several factors. For starters, these boot camps are only for those teens that are not on medication. They do not have the resources to deal with these types of situations. Parents should also put their child through a complete physical and mental evaluation with a doctor prior to enrolling in boot camp just to make sure the child is physically and mentally capable of handling the strict guidelines involved. Those teens that have more severe issues such as thoughts of suicide, severe depression, or other self damaging issues should not attend a boot camp for troubled teens, but would be safer in a hospital environment. Boot camp is really geared for those troubled teens that have defiance issues than those with true medical problems.

Boot camps for troubled teens do cost money unless your child attends a state funded boot camp through the juvenile offender system. So making sure that boot camp is the best choice for your child is important before spending the money on a program that you aren't sure will work for your teen.
