How to Tell if Your Teen is TroubledRecognizing that your teen is a troubled teen can be disturbing to parents, but it is also important to realize that your teen needs help before it is too late. It does not mean that the parent is a failure because their child has turned into a troubled teen. It simply means that environmental factors in addition to possible mental issues have caused their child to become unhappy and troubled. Admitting this and helping your child find the help that he or she needs is the most important thing. To determine if your teen is in fact a troubled teen, a parent must first keep their eyes and ears open for any of the warning signs. This can be difficult to decipher between what is a warning sign and what is perfectly normal for a teenager. For instance, it is normal for a teen to be a little bit moody or to change their routine such as withdrawing from family time, though not from their friends. But it is not normal for them to shut themselves away from family and friends entirely or to sleep too much or to have constant mood swings. Total and complete behavior changes are a big warning sign that your teen may be a troubled teen. In fact, these changes can often be indicative of a drug or alcohol problem. Troubled teens are known to fall into the wrong crowds and often can lead them into taking drugs or becoming a heavy drinker. Substance abuse can also cause your teen to develop problems in school, especially when they did not have problems in the past. Troubled teens stop doing homework and studying and are frequently tardy, if they even show up at all. Making sure that your troubled teen is getting all the help necessary and possible is extremely important. Without treatment, a troubled teen can develop all kinds of issues. Troubled teen girls often fall into poor relationships and can end up the victim of date rape more easily than normal teen girls. Anxiety, physical abuse and eating disorders are also common things that happen with teens who are troubled and do not get help. This is why it is important for parents to pay special attention for any warning signs and take your child to the doctor if any appear, even if it does turn out to be nothing. |
