Treatment Options for Troubled Teens

Back to articles list

Teens who are troubled do not always understand that there is a need for treatment. They often feel that this is the way a person should feel when they are growing up or that there is no way that anything can ever really make them feel better. This is where it is a parent's job to step in and help the teen to seek the treatment that they need to indeed feel better. Convincing a teen that treatment is the way to go is not often an easy task, but it can be done.

Treatment for troubled teens can be many things. Helping your child find the choice that is right for them can be a difficult and long task. Seeking the advice of a medical professional is so important to ensure that you are getting the right fit for your troubled teen. A doctor that is familiar with your child and your child's medical history as well as your family history is the best person to help you with your decision.

Seeing a therapist is a good first step. It is also important to remember that treatments for troubled teens are not something that takes effect immediately. All treatments take time. It is also a good idea to either sit in for a few sessions, though a troubled teen is less likely to open up with you there, or at the very least, attend a few individual sessions yourself. The therapist will likely discuss general things about what your child says, but will not go into detail unless necessary.

Another option in addition to therapy would be medication. For disorders such as bipolar and depression, medication can be an important part of controlling the extremes and keeping your child on a more even keel. This also can take some time, both for the medication to take effect and also to figure out the best dosage and/or combination. For many people, though, medication is a last resort. Many people do not like the idea of being under the control of medication possibly for the rest of their lives.

If neither of these things works out, there are other more expensive options. You can send your child to a school that specializes in the care of troubled teens or you can send them to a shorter camp or program for the same purpose.
