Troubled Teens Help - ODD.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD): Parenting Troubled Teens Parent Awareness: Symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder, with a need for teen help, include frequent temper tantrums, regular defiance of adults or authority figures, arugmentative behavior with adults, intentional attempts to aggravate others, projecting responsibility for misbehavior to others, easily aggravated or angered "at the drop of a hat," vindictiveness, etc.

Signs that you, the parent, are having difficulty coping with a troubled teen's ODD issues include the sensation that you are always "walking on eggshells," fearful of what might trigger the next outburst or argument. Your family life may seem stressed to the breaking point on a regular basis, especially when the struggling teen is present. Whenever you try to "do what's right" in dealing with the ODD teen, setting appropriate boundaries, consequencing, etc., it all seems to turn out wrong.

There are many causes of Oppositional Defiant Disorder. A therapist and a doctor should be your first stop in trying to determine if, in actuality, your troubled teen has ODD, and what course of medical and/or therapeutic action should be taken. However, regardless of the final diagnosis, you should remember that your consistent attempts at good parenting,and at maintaining a strong, caring relationship, are among the most important things your troubled teen needs.
